Initiative: Safe Water

Need

Worldwide, more than 10 million people – many of them under 18 – die annually from diseases related to unsafe drinking water.

Sewage run-off and use of riverbanks and stream beds as garbage dumps was common practice in the largest cities and smallest towns in the United States even as late as the 1960s.

Unbelievably, contaminated water caused illness and death for many people from our grandparents’ and parents’ generations.

Today, health awareness and advanced water and sewage treatment practices have largely eliminated diseases like Cholera, Typhoid, and Dysentery.

But in rural villages and larger population centers in places like South Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean, water rife with disease-carrying organisms is still linked to bacterial, parasitic and other waterborne diseases.

Solution

International Aid teaches about the health dangers of unsafe water and helps provide solutions that allow potable (safe for drinking) water to flow safely.

International Aid Safe Water Strategies:

  • To provide education about the need for health, hygiene and safe water.
  • To promote and install household and other point-of-use treatment systems for safe drinking water.
  • To develop distribution channels to expand use of the BioSand filter and other products

HydrAid™ BioSand Water Filter

This filter provides clean, safe, affordable drinking water at a rate of 1 liter per minute. It can be:

  • Installed in a home
  • Cleaned in place
  • Operated on demand without electricity
  • Operated with local sand and gravel resources, in many parts of the world

Business Development Partnerships

In 2006 International Aid celebrated opening of a water filter manufacturing facility in Honduras. Filters produced at this plant will be sold throughout the country, with proceeds reinvested in facility operations and filter sales expansion.

You can make a difference today by purchasing a HydrAid™ filter.A HydrAid™ BioSand Water Filter costs just $32. Getting it to a family and ready to use costs another $18. So for just $50 a family can have safe water for the next decade or longer. How can you help? Donate Today (hydraid.org)
