Nearly 18 years ago, Stu Smith, a doctor who was practicing on the East Side of the state of Michigan, took a medical missions trip to Haiti. While in Haiti, he was a part of many operations and procedures within the local hospital. During his visit there, one young man stood out to him. This man assisted with operations at the hospital but was not medically trained. This man’s drive and determination was admirable and caused Dr. Smith to have a conversation with him. The man’s name was Jean Marius Gardy. Dr. Smith told Jean “I see a great deal of potential in you.” A potential that Dr. Smith did not want to see go to waste. He encouraged Jean to go to medical school, but lack of money crushed his dreams of becoming a doctor.
Upon Dr. Smith’s return to Michigan, he couldn’t stop thinking about Jean and his work ethic, determination and desire. He began to pray, “Lord, show me a way to help this man go through medical school.” God answered that prayer and Dr. Smith was able to help Jean receive his medical training. “I never dreamed that I could become a doctor,” said Jean, now Dr. Gardy. “My dream came true when I met Dr. Smith in Haiti.”
Since then Dr. Smith has retired from practice and has relocated to West Michigan. In 2009 Dr. Smith introduced Dr. Gardy to International Aid, as Dr. Gardy began a venture of staring a medical clinic in Haiti. His first shipment of equipment from International Aid helped start the clinic. Just a few weeks ago, Dr. Gardy was at I.A. with Dr. Smith, and they were picking out equipment for the new 20 bed maternity wing that is being built in Haiti.
“I couldn’t do what I do, without the equipment and supplies I get from International Aid” says Dr. Gardy, “everything that I have to look for at International Aid is very important to me and the clinic.”
We are excited about the partnership that we have with Dr. Gardy and the lives that are being changed in Haiti. God has opened some amazing doors for us to work together. “I’m a lucky guy” says Dr. Gardy “I.A. offers opportunities that I can’t get elsewhere, just like the opportunity that Dr. Smith gave me, I’m so grateful for everything that I have been blessed with and am a part of.”
